A community of donors investing in the cure for EB

A pattern, and a collective of butterflies.

The Kaleidoscope is EBRPA's community of donors — a collective of contributions, large and small, transforming giving into shared commitment for people living with Epidermolysis Bullosa.

Three tiers. A three-year horizon. A way of backing the science with the discipline of an investor and the patience of a partner.

Before we get into it

Let's be honest about what's happening here.

If you're reading this anywhere near the end of financial year, you are almost certainly being asked for money by everyone else right now. We know. We see the same inbox you do.

So we're going to do this a little differently.

EBRPA has never really been a "give now" sort of organisation. We are a venture philanthropy fund. We invest in EB research strategically, over years, with the discipline of an investor rather than the urgency of an appeal. That long game is the entire point of us — it is why two of the three approved EB treatments in the world today exist.

And it is why the Kaleidoscope is not a campaign. It is a community: a structure built for the people who want to back this work over time, on terms that match how the work actually unfolds.

If you're here, you're probably the kind of person we built it for. Welcome.

What is the Kaleidoscope?

A pattern that only exists because of everyone in it.

The word kaleidoscope carries two meanings, and we chose it for both. It is a geometric pattern formed by individual fragments held to the light. It is also the collective noun for a group of butterflies in motion.

Each meaning matters.

People living with EB have long been called butterfly kids - their skin as fragile as a butterfly's wings. In the Kaleidoscope, we hold both: the fragility, and the strength that emerges when fragility is met by community.

Like butterflies in flight, each contribution — whatever its scale - brings something unique to the collective. Like a kaleidoscope turning, each new supporter, each research milestone, each data point shifts the pattern of possibility. Diversity of contribution creates the optical effect: progress that is far greater than any single piece.

"A kaleidoscope only works because of what each individual brings to it - and the most breathtaking ones take time to form."
Who's in the Kaleidoscope?

Three layers, forming one pattern.

The EB community — at the centre.

Everything starts here. EB is a family of conditions — simplex, dystrophic, junctional, Kindler — affecting people of every age, in different ways, with different needs. Children for whom a hug is a wound. Adults navigating chronic pain. Families carrying both the science and the daily weight of care. Their fragility is real. So is their strength. They are the heart of the Kaleidoscope, and the reason every other ring exists.

The donors — holding the ring.

Around the EB community sits the second ring — the donors who enable, support, and sustain the work. Whether your contribution is small or significant, the Kaleidoscope holds it equally. A monthly gift at Wings is a fragment. So is a major partnership at EverBrave. Both belong to the same pattern, and neither is complete without the other.

Researchers, industry & advocacy partners — shifting the whole thing.

The outer ring is where the pattern moves outward into the world. Scientists pursuing gene therapy, protein replacement, regenerative medicine, pain and itch. Industry partners building the manufacturing and commercialisation pathways no charity could build alone. Advocacy partners shifting policy, regulation and access. Two of the three FDA-approved EB treatments now in existence began as projects EBRPA backed. That is the pattern shifting in real time.

The Kaleidoscope effect
It transforms giving from a transaction into a shared commitment — many people, coming together, to create lasting change.

Why three years?

A planning horizon, not a contract.

Membership of the Kaleidoscope is a three-year commitment. This is not incidental. In venture philanthropy, meaningful research outcomes require sustained investment — both financial and relational.

A three-year partnership allows EBRPA to plan with confidence, researchers to work without interruption, and you to see the arc of your investment unfold in real time.

We don't lock you in legally — life changes, and so do circumstances. The commitment is a planning horizon, not a contract. What we ask is intention; what we promise in return is that we will spend that horizon worth your trust.

The science your giving backs

Discipline, not just good intentions.

EBRPA operates as a venture philanthropy fund — one of very few in the rare disease space. That means we don't pool donations and disperse them. We invest them: strategically, into the world's most promising EB research, with milestone tracking, due diligence and accountability built in.

And when funded research reaches commercial therapy, we retain a financial upside that is reinvested entirely into further EB research. Capital recycles. Every dollar of return funds the next breakthrough.

Recognised by Harvard, Yale and the Milken Institute FasterCures as an exemplar for rare disease philanthropy. Typically more than 90% of revenue flows directly to research and programs — a figure that reached 100% in late 2025, made possible by two private donors covering all operating costs.

Questions you'll probably have

Things worth asking up front.

Is my gift tax-deductible?
Yes. EBRPA is a registered Australian charity (ABN 22 615 377 136) with DGR status. Gifts of $2 or more are tax-deductible. For monthly giving, you'll receive a single annual receipt summarising all payments in the financial year.
What does the three-year commitment actually mean?
It means we ask you to plan to give at your chosen tier for three years — either as monthly contributions or as annual gifts. We don't lock you in legally; life changes, and so do circumstances. The commitment is a planning horizon, not a contract.
Can I change tiers?
Yes. Members can move up between tiers at any time. If circumstances change and you need to step down, contact us and we'll work it out together.
What does "venture philanthropy" actually mean here?
It means EBRPA invests donor capital with the same discipline a venture firm brings to startup investments — due diligence, milestone tracking, accountability — and that when funded research reaches commercial therapy, we retain a financial upside that is reinvested entirely into further EB research. Returns to date have reached up to 600% on individual investments.
How will I hear about progress?
All Kaleidoscope members receive regular research updates. Horizon members receive deeper engagement with our research pipeline. EverBrave members are connected directly to researchers and are part of strategic conversations about where the science is heading.
Where does my money actually go?
Directly to research and program work. EBRPA's operating ratio sits above 90% — reaching 100% in late 2025 thanks to private donors covering all overhead. We are deliberately lean, and your contribution flows almost entirely to the science.
What if I want to give more — or differently?
We would love to talk. The Kaleidoscope is the structured giving community; for major gifts, multi-year partnerships, corporate giving, bequests or anything outside the standard tiers, email Simone at research@ebresearch.org and we'll find the right shape together.
Who do I contact with questions?
Email research@ebresearch.org. We would genuinely rather have a conversation than have you guess.
